E-commerce is growing rapidly in South Africa.  In the last 12 months, 69% of adults who are active online, bought something online. The total online spend for South African in 2018 was around R45.3 billion, which is a 19% increase from 2017!

These figures are expected to increase even more over the next 24 months. A total spend of R61.9 billion is forecasted for 2020.

The reason for this rapid increase is due to the convenience of shopping online. Advances in technology, internet speeds, mobile phone technology and access to data, have made it easier for South Africans to shop online.
A rather interesting statistic gathered from over 90,000 respondents during the South African e-commerce Awards, showed that the vast majority of online shoppers were women between the ages of 18 to 39. Also, the majority of South Africans spend between R250 to R1,000 when making an online purchase.

Customers expect every business to have a website and more and more people are buying products and paying for services online. It is often cheaper, more convenient and saves time. People prefer to shop after hours or during their work breaks in the comfort of their homes or offices.
